The Four Main Directions

The Four Main Directions

The four main directions, also called cardinal directions, are North, South, East, and West. They help us navigate and understand location and movement.

  • North (N): Points toward the top of maps and is often associated with cold regions, like the North Pole.
  • South (S): Opposite of north, pointing downward on maps. The South Pole is located here.
  • East (E): Where the sun rises in the morning. It is to the right when facing north.
  • West (W): Where the sun sets in the evening. It is to the left when facing north.

A useful way to remember these directions is the phrase:
"Never Eat Soggy Waffles" (North, East, South, West).

These directions are essential for travel, navigation, and geography. A compass helps people find directions by pointing north, making it easier to determine the other three.
