The Four Main Directions
The four main directions, also called cardinal directions, are North, South, East, and West. They help us navigate and understand location and movement.
- North (N): Points toward the top of maps and is often associated with cold regions, like the North Pole.
- South (S): Opposite of north, pointing downward on maps. The South Pole is located here.
- East (E): Where the sun rises in the morning. It is to the right when facing north.
- West (W): Where the sun sets in the evening. It is to the left when facing north.
A useful way to remember these directions is the phrase:
"Never Eat Soggy Waffles" (North, East, South, West).
These directions are essential for travel, navigation, and geography. A compass helps people find directions by pointing north, making it easier to determine the other three.
