States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas

Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas. Each state has different properties based on how its particles are arranged and move.

  • Solids have a fixed shape and volume because their particles are tightly packed together. An example is ice, which is the solid form of water.
  • Liquids take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume. The particles are more loosely arranged than in solids, allowing them to move freely. Water in its normal state is a liquid.
  • Gases have no fixed shape or volume. Their particles move quickly and spread out to fill any space. Steam, or water vapor, is the gas form of water.

How Water Changes States

Water can change between these states based on temperature:

  • Freezing: When water is cooled below 0°C (32°F), it becomes ice (solid).
  • Melting: When ice warms up, it turns back into liquid water.
  • Evaporation: When water is heated, it turns into steam (gas).
  • Condensation: Steam cools down and becomes liquid water again.

These changes show how matter transforms based on temperature, making water one of the best examples of how solids, liquids, and gases exist in nature.
