The simple present tense is one of the most commonly used tenses in English. It describes actions or events that happen regularly, facts or general truths, and things that are always true. This tense is also used for scheduled events in the future.
1. Structure of the Simple Present Tense
The structure of the simple present tense depends on the subject (he, she, it, or other subjects).
Positive Sentences
For subjects "I," "you," "we," "they" → Use the base form of the verb.
- Examples: I work every day. / They live in Canada.
For subjects "he," "she," "it" → Add -s or -es to the base form of the verb.
Examples: She works every day. / He lives in Canada.
For verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, or -o, add -es:

If a verb ends in a consonant + -y, change the -y to -ies:
- Examples: He studies English. / She tries hard.
Negative Sentences
To make negative sentences in the simple present tense, use do not (don’t) or does not (doesn’t) + the base form of the verb.
For subjects "I," "you," "we," "they" → use do not (don’t).
